Intro

The Holy Quran: Translation and Meaning is a monumental work with a rich history behind its creation. The journey began in 1961 when the Indian Congress Committee held a significant conference in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Maulana Abu Saleem Muhammad Abdul Hai, a prominent leader of the Jamaath, attended the event, where many participants expressed a desire for a Hindi translation of the Quran.

Unfortunately, such a translation was not available at the time, highlighting a significant gap. This experience inspired Maulana Abdul Hai to embark on the task of translating the Quran into Hindi, with the support of the Rampur Welfare Society, which he had founded. It was successfully introduced in January 1966 which reached millions of hearts. It was then inspired by I F T to do the Tamil translation. The Tamil translation of the Quran task began in 1978.

The Arabic Quranic Text was translated to Urdu by Moulanaa Syed Abul A’la Moudoodi with the help of Which it was translated to Hindi, Tamil and further into other regional Languages.

The Tamil translation was a collaborative effort, led by a team of esteemed scholars from I F T including Maulavi A. Qutbuddeen Ahmad Baqavi, Afzalul Ulama Maulavi R. Abdur Raoof Baqavi and supervised by Maulavi M.S. Syed Muhammad Anwari Fazil Baqavi, Maulavi K.J. Mastaan Ali Baqavi Umari and Maulana M.A. Jameel Ahmed. The work did not stop there. Between 1980 and 1985, individual Surahs, including Surah Al-Baqarah, Surah Al-Fatiha, and Surah Yaseen, were translated and published. By 1986, the first volume of the Quran, covering Surah Al-Fatiha to Surah An-Nahl, was released, followed by the second volume from Surah Banu Israel to Surah An-Naas in 1989. These volumes were later combined into a complete work. It took fourteen years to complete, culminating  a work that has since become a cherished resource for Tamil-speaking Muslims. Their meticulous work ensured that the translation was not only accurate but also linguistically elegant.

The project received widespread support from the public, scholars, and literary figures. Poet Vairamuthu, upon reviewing the translation, praised its clarity and elegance, suggesting that it would remain relevant and untouched for at least 50 years. The Tamil Quran has since reached thousands of readers, with its popularity and distribution continuing to grow, making it a significant contribution to the understanding and appreciation of the Quran in the Tamil language.
